Resources for Students
Academic Advising
Each student in the College of Business is assigned a faculty advisor. The advisee/advisor relationship can be one of the most valuable that students will have during their years at the university. Advisors assist students in developing a suitable educational plan and assist students in finding ways to deal with issues that come up along the way. Students are encouraged to work closely with their advisors, not just during registration and early registration periods, but throughout each academic year.
Technology Support
The Rathe Computer Laboratory, located in Miller Hall, is reserved for business students. This lab, open seven days a week, is equipped with fully networked personal computers, and laptop computers are also available for checkout by business students. All workstations include Microsoft Office and specialized statistical and data analysis software as well as full Internet and library access.
For students who prefer to use personal laptop computers, the College of Business provides wireless internet throughout Miller Hall, providing additional access to email, library resources, the Internet, and Intranet access to course materials.
Use of laptops is strongly encouraged in the College of Business, and the college has entered into a partnership with CDWG and Toshiba to offer students affordable, high equality technology. Details are available through a link from the college ’s web site, http://business.loyno.edu/Laptop/index.html.
College of Business Readership Program
All new freshmen, seniors enrolled in the business capstone course (BA B445, Business Policy), and students enrolled in the MBA program are provided with subscriptions to Business Week magazine. Articles from the magazine are used in classes as the basis for discussion of current business issues, practices and challenges. In addition, all incoming College of Business freshmen are provided with copies of two books which they are to read in the summer before entering the college. The two books are: The Lexus and the Olive Tree by Thomas Friedman, and Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich. The students are provided with a set of discussion questions to be explored, and in the fall the students participate in discussion groups to explore various concepts/ideas presented in each book.
College of Business Internship Program
All students majoring in business are required to complete an internship for credit during their junior or senior year. This program provides all graduating business students a school-to-work experience to supplement their academic achievements. Students must spend between 120 and 150 hours at a job site and regularly interact with an academic supervisor as well as the site supervisor. The College of Business’s Internship Director assists students in locating appropriate internship opportunities (in New Orleans, in other parts of the U.S., and international placements). Assistance is also provided to help students in the development of their resumes and to prepare for interviews. Click here for more information.
Introduction to Business Lab
All College of Business students enrolled in BA B100, Introduction to Business, are required to participate in the BA B102 Lab. The lab time is reserved for computer skills enhancement. The computer lab sessions are held in the Rathe Computer Lab in Miller Hall, and cover Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel skills. Students must complete Word and Excel assessment tests.
Executive Mentoring Program
Freshmen entering the College of Business participate in the Executive Mentoring Program during their first year at Loyola. In this program, successful business executives from the New Orleans area mentor students in small group and individual meetings. Students meet with their mentors three or four times each semester, and participation is mandatory. Mentors discuss with the students a variety of topics, including time management, personal finance, goal setting, communication skills, job market realities, etc. The mentor program also includes field trips for the students to local businesses, a speaker series, and opportunities for the students to interact with executives in informal social settings, including dinners and coffee meetings. Click here for more information.
Peer Mentoring
New freshmen in the College of Business are provided with a peer mentor – a sophomore, junior, or senior business major. The purpose of the peer mentor program is to help new students feel more comfortable on campus during their initial semester. Peer mentors contact their freshmen and provide them with information about campus life. The mentors encourage freshmen to get involved in student organizations and to participate in activities on campus. For students with problems, mentors are to refer them to appropriate help, if needed.
