Summer Program in China
May 13 - June 3, 2008

Loyola’s College of Business is offering a summer international business program in China.

The cost of $3975 ($4175 for graduate enrollment) includes tuition and fees for two courses (six credit hours), housing, company visits, and insurance. A university study abroad fee of $250 will be assessed through the Student Finance Office.

Objectives

Study contemporary Chinese history, culture, and business practices in the fascinating cities of Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai. Students will have the opportunity to visit the GreatWall, the old and new Summer Palaces, and the Forbidden City in Beijing. In Shanghai, they will visit the famousWater Town and
Shanghai History Museum. In Xi’an, they will visit the Big Mosque, the TerracottaWarriors, and the Big
Goose Pagoda.While experiencing a new culture, Chinese economy and unique business traditions will be studied, providing students with an unforgettable learning experience.

Loyola University New Orleans is fortunate to team up with the Beijing Center for Chinese Studies.
The center, whose U.S. sponsor is Loyola University Chicago, offers year-round programs and has designed a program using its faculty as guest lecturers and including cultural excursions and company visits. Accommodations will include staying at the center’s dormitories in Beijing and Shanghai and a hotel in Xi’an.

In only three weeks, students will have an intense
introduction to a new culture and see some of the
most exciting and interesting sites in Asia, while
receiving college credits.

  • China: The Move to Globalization (IB 493) - Dr. Wing Fok
  • International Business Practices in China (IB 345) - Dr. Wing Fok. May be taken for International Business Major
  • Culture and Society: Global Issues (SOCIX194) - Dr. Lydia Voigt. May be taken to meet social science requirement for International Business Majors.
  • Intro to the Criminal Justice Environment in China (CRJUXxxx) - Dr. William Thornton

Courses for Non-Business Majors:

  • Culture and Society: Global Issues (SOCIX194) - Dr. Lydia Voigt. May be taken for advanced common curriculum behavioral/social science credit.
  • Criminal Justice Environment in China (CRJUX194) - Dr. William Thornton.

Schedule

3-4 pre-departure classes will be scheduled for late March, early April. Dates will be announced at the beginning of the Spring semester.

Travel Arrangements

Students should plan to arrive in Beijing on or before TBA, preferably in no more than three groups so pick up arrangement can be made. Information pertaining to visa requirements, health insurance, and other necessary documents for international travel will be provided to the participant upon registration.

MBA Students

MBA students are welcome to participate in this program. In addition to the regular course work, MBA students will receive supervised instruction in carrying out graduate-level projects. The projects will focus on the specific subject of each course and the student’s professional goals.

Campus Site and Accommodations

Students will be staying at The Beijing Center for Chinese Studies and similar university dormitories with typical double occupancy, university style dormitory accommodations, in Beijing and Shanghai . While traveling in XiAn, they will be staying in a three-star hotel suitable for western travelers. The Beijing Center for Chinese Studies is located inside the campus of University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, China .

Program Costs

Price of the program: $3,975 (undergraduate), $4,175 (MBA), Includes:

  • tuition and fees for six credit hours
  • accommodations in Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai
  • class-related company visits
  • insurance
  • some ground transportation

Not included in price:

  • airfare to China (New Orleans-China, approx. $2,300 round-trip)
  • some ground transportation
  • meals
  • any personal expenditures (laundry, telephone calls, etc.)

Registration

Complete the application form (Adobe PDF) and return, with $200 deposit (refundable if not accepted into the program) to the College of Business Dean’s Office (301 Miller Hall) by February 15, 2008. Also, please complete this Summer Application Release Form. A registration form and additional information will be provided to the student upon receipt of this application. The balance is due March 15, 2008. There is a late fee of $150 for the deposit and for the balance.
